A Lullaby I Wrote

30th July 2025

Hi Reader!

I was re-watching a childhood classic with my mum, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I’d forgotten how much I love that film! My mum used to put it on for me when I was sick, and it’s so much more enjoyable when you’re not delirious with fever. She used to sing my sisters and me some of the songs from the film, including I’ve Got You Two, Truly Scrumptious and Hushabye Mountain.

Listening to them again made me nostalgic for the songs she used to sing to us, especially Hushabye Mountain, which has a special place in my heart. For a little creative fun, I thought I’d write my own! It’s whimsical (and maybe a little cheesy), but I hope you enjoy it!

The Fairchild Lullaby

Moonboats wait by the Stillwater Shore,
With sails stitched from dreams and star-thread and more.
They sail over oceans and starlit lagoons,
To kingdoms that float on the breath of the moon.

They land in the stillness of Lullaby Cove,
Where the breeze sings soft through the Hushabye Grove.
Where clouds wear crowns and comets, they dance,
And the hush of the night leads the world into trance.

A castle is carved out of sugar and stone,
With a garden where night-blooming roses have grown.
And lanterns drift low on a peppermint breeze,
And wishes grow ripe on the cinnamon trees.

There’s plenty of places to lay down your head,
With thistle-down pillows and rose-petal beds.
And all of the windows are shaped like the moon,
They open with songs and close with a tune.

So sleep, my fair child, the stars know the way,
They’ll carry you safe to that world far away.
And I’ll be right here when dreaming is through—
With morning, and kisses, and sunlight for you.

Writing a lullaby is a surprisingly comforting activity. It pushed me to be a little more whimsical with my writing, which I thoroughly enjoyed! I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to write and wants to stretch their creativity.

I’m even thinking of dusting off my dad’s old piano. I haven’t played since I was 10, but hopefully I can put a tune to this lullaby soon!

Thanks for reading,
Jess x
